Canggu

Working remotely from Canggu: an honest guide

Canggu suits you if you want surfing, fitness and lots of other remote workers, and you are fine getting around by scooter or ride-hailing. If you want quiet, walkable streets or traditional Bali, it will likely frustrate you: it is built up, noisy and geared toward foreigners.

In short

  • Live close to where you work: getting between Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan can easily take 30 minutes in traffic.
  • For calls you need a coworking space with closed rooms, the open café setups are usually too loud.
  • Germans and most EU citizens enter on a 30-day visa on arrival that can be extended once by 30 days, plus the Bali levy and a digital arrival card.
  • The dry season runs roughly April to October; in the wet season Canggu has had several serious floods recently.
  • Traffic is the biggest risk: the German Foreign Office explicitly advises against renting scooters.

Where to stay

Canggu has no real center. It is a strip of villages between rice fields and the coast, and the few main roads are permanently jammed. What matters most is whether you can walk to your coworking space, food and the beach.

Berawa

The most developed part, with cafés, gyms and coworking spaces within walking distance. Highest rents in the area and plenty of construction noise.

Batu Bolong and Echo Beach

The surf and nightlife core. Handy for morning surfs, but often loud at night because of bars and beach clubs.

Pererenan

West of the river, a bit calmer and greener. A good pick if you want quiet but still need cafés nearby.

Tibubeneng and Padonan

The inland area to the north. Cheaper villas and studios, but you will depend on a scooter or ride-hailing. Parts of it flooded in December 2025.

Where to work

Several well-known spaces are gone: Dojo Bali closed in late 2022 and Outpost Canggu shut its coworking floor in 2024, so older lists are often wrong. We checked the places below in October 2026. Prices vary between sources, so confirm on arrival.

PUCO Rooftop (Tibubeneng)

Locally owned. Its website lists a 24-hour pass at IDR 200,000 (about EUR 10), a week at IDR 750,000 and a month at IDR 2 million. Focus rooms and LAN cables for calls; the open rooftop gets hot around midday.

Sokkool (Tibubeneng)

Coworking plus coliving with pool and gym. Day pass IDR 180,000, unlimited month IDR 2.7 million including some focus room hours. Not fully quiet during the day.

BWork Bali (Jl. Nelayan)

Large 24/7 space with meeting and focus rooms, pool and café. Recent guides list about IDR 299,000 a day and IDR 3.85 million for an unlimited month. The café side is social, not quiet.

SETTER (Jl. Raya Semat)

Often rated best for heavy call days: several Zoom pods, two internet providers, open around the clock. About IDR 300,000 a day, IDR 3.7 million a month. Some road noise.

Camp 308 at IZE Canggu (Pererenan)

Hotel coworking space for 48 people, reported as free to use, quiet and air-conditioned, with two call rooms. Two rooms won't cover a full day of meetings.

Tribal (Pererenan)

Café with a coworking area: the first hours come with an order, after that there is a minimum spend. Fast Wi-Fi, but no air conditioning and no private rooms, so not for confidential calls.

Internet & SIM

Coworking spaces and better rentals usually have solid connections; cheap guesthouses vary. Keep mobile data as a backup, since storms can cut power. Know about IMEI rules: Indonesia blocks foreign phones on local SIMs unless the IMEI is registered. Tourist packages register it temporarily, though sources disagree on how long.

Telkomsel eSIM SIMPATI Tourist

For foreigners with a passport, sold at Telkomsel stores (GraPARI) and the airport; they ask for your IMEI at purchase. Widely used, with good coverage on Bali. For longer stays, ask how long the IMEI activation is valid.

XL Axiata

The other big operator, with tourist SIMs at the airport and in its stores. Useful as a second line if Telkomsel is weak where you live.

IMEI beyond 90 days

If you stay longer or want to use your phone permanently on a local SIM, you need to register the IMEI with customs. For 2 to 8 weeks, a tourist package is usually enough.

When to go

Temperatures barely change; rain is what matters. The dry season runs roughly April to October, which also brings the most reliable west-coast surf. July, August and Christmas to New Year are peak season, with packed roads and higher rents. From roughly November to March, rain comes in heavy bursts and roads can flood. Watch for Nyepi, the Day of Silence in March: the airport closes for 24 hours, you must stay in, and mobile internet may be restricted.

What it costs

Canggu is expensive for Southeast Asia because housing is aimed at foreigners. Rents below are asking prices from agent listings at about IDR 20,000 per euro (October 2026). Monthly rates are negotiable; electricity, cleaning and pool upkeep are not always included.

Studio, 1 month

From about IDR 14 million (around EUR 700) for a furnished studio inland, based on current listings. Facebook groups and asking around in person often turn up cheaper options.

1-bedroom villa, 1 month

From about IDR 17.5 million (around EUR 875), considerably more in Berawa and near the beach.

2-bedroom villa with pool, 1 month

Around IDR 25 to 60 million (about EUR 1,250 to 3,000), which works if you split it.

Coliving, 1 month

Sokkool starts at IDR 880,000 per night with 5 percent off from 28 nights, so roughly EUR 1,250 a month including pool and gym.

Coworking, 1 month

About IDR 2 to 3.85 million (EUR 100 to 190) for unlimited access; hour bundles are cheaper.

Meeting people

Meeting people is easy if you spend time in coworking and coliving spaces. Events change fast, so go by current announcements.

Coworking events

PUCO, Sokkool and BWork run regular community evenings, workshops and sports sessions. Ask at reception for the weekly schedule.

Facebook and WhatsApp groups

Groups like Canggu Community and Bali Expats are where rentals, scooter sales and events get posted. Read with some skepticism, they also attract ads and scams.

Nomads.com meetups

Shows who is in town and lists ad hoc meetups. Useful in your first week.

Getting there & paperwork

You fly into Denpasar (DPS); there are no direct flights from Germany. Canggu is only about 20 km away, but allow plenty of time for traffic. According to the German Foreign Office (October 2026), Germans get a visa on arrival for IDR 500,000, valid 30 days and extendable once by 30 days. You can apply online in advance as an e-VOA; extending requires a visit to an immigration office for biometrics. You need six months of passport validity and an onward ticket. Also fill in the digital arrival card (up to 72 hours before, via All Indonesia) and pay the IDR 150,000 Bali levy, ideally in advance via Love Bali. Use only official portals, fake agencies are common. The visa does not allow work for Indonesian clients; this is not legal advice.

The downsides

Day to day, Canggu is less relaxed than it looks on Instagram. The right base and season help, but won't make these go away.

Traffic and scooter crashes

Roads are narrow and constantly jammed, and the German Foreign Office says scooter accidents are common. If you ride anyway, you need an international license with a motorcycle category and insurance that covers it.

Flooding

In September and December 2025, parts of Canggu flooded and people died. Building over former rice fields is widely seen as one cause. In the wet season, check whether your place sits in a low-lying spot.

Health

The German Foreign Office warns about methanol-tainted alcohol and about rabies from dogs. See a doctor right after any bite, and consider getting vaccinated before you travel.

Nyepi and outages

On Nyepi everything stops, and heavy storms can cut power or internet at other times too. Have a backup plan for important deadlines.
