Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Working remotely from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: the honest guide

Las Palmas works if you want a real city with an urban beach, mild weather during the European winter and a time zone that sits one hour behind Central Europe. If you expect postcard sunshine every single day or need to order things online regularly, it will frustrate you more than you think.

In short

  • Most remote workers live in Guanarteme or Santa Catalina, within walking distance of Playa de Las Canteras.
  • Nearly all coworkings with call rooms sit in that same beach district, and day passes run about 20 EUR plus 7 % IGIC tax.
  • EU SIM cards work under roam-like-at-home rules, so for 2–8 weeks you usually don't need a local SIM.
  • In July and August a layer of cloud often sits over the city; autumn to spring is the better bet for sun and community.
  • The Canaries are outside the EU VAT area, so online orders often trigger customs fees or simply don't ship.

Where to stay

Las Palmas stretches long and narrow between two coastlines. For a workation, what matters most is how far you walk to the beach and to your desk. Most coworkings are on the Las Canteras side, so it pays to look there even if rents are a bit higher.

Guanarteme / Las Canteras

The unofficial nomad district at the western end of the beach, close to the La Cicer surf break and several coworkings. Busy, lots of short-term rentals, and the promenade gets loud in the evenings.

Santa Catalina / Puerto

The central hub with the bus interchange, port and nightlife, a few minutes from the beach. Convenient, but the area around Parque Santa Catalina is noisy on weekends and during carnival.

Alcaravaneras

A residential area on the east side with its own small city beach and fewer visitors. Quieter and more local; getting to the Guanarteme coworkings means a bus or a walk of 30 minutes or more.

Ciudad Jardín

A leafy garden district of villas between Alcaravaneras and the centre. Repeople runs two coliving houses here, a good fit if you want quiet and a built-in community.

Triana / Vegueta

The old town and shopping streets in the south, with beautiful architecture and the San Telmo bus station. You're far from the beach but closer to everyday local life.

Where to work

Coworking density around Las Canteras is high, and several spaces have dedicated call rooms, which is not a given in Spain. Prices in the Canaries are usually quoted before the 7 % IGIC tax rather than VAT. Book a trial day before committing to a month, since atmosphere and noise vary a lot.

Soppa de Azul

About a minute from Las Canteras, with five video call rooms included for coworkers according to its website. Day pass 20 EUR, week 75 EUR, month 150–175 EUR, all plus IGIC; 24/7 access with your own key.

White Forest Coworking

On Calle Simancas in Guanarteme, with two phone booths and a meeting room; members get 24/7 access. You can book a trial day on the website, but monthly prices only appear as images, so ask first.

Talleres Palermo

A converted carpentry workshop on Calle República Dominicana with a bar, rooftop garden and an events programme. Great for meeting people, less so for back-to-back calls: reviews mention a noisy bar area, and prices are on request.

Internet & SIM

For mobile roaming, the Canary Islands count as EU territory. An EU SIM works at domestic rates as long as you don't use it abroad more than at home over several months; if you do, your provider may ask questions and add surcharges. A Spanish prepaid SIM is mainly worth it if your home plan has little data. In Spain you need to show ID to register a SIM.

EU SIM on roaming

The simplest option for 2–8 weeks. Check whether your plan has a fair-use cap on roaming data.

Digi (prepaid)

A low-cost Spanish provider with no contract; each top-up lasts 28 days. We didn't find a Digi store in Las Palmas, so order online or buy at a reseller.

Coworking as backup

For important calls, coworking Wi-Fi with a call room is more reliable than a holiday flat's connection. Ask hosts for a speed test screenshot before booking.

When to go

The climate is mild all year; the real differences are sunshine, prices and community. November to March is peak season for northern Europeans, with more remote workers, more events and higher rents. In July and August the trade winds often push a low cloud layer over the city, locally called panza de burro: the south of the island is sunny while Las Palmas stays grey but warm. Now and then calima brings Saharan dust and hazy air. Carnival in February or March is big and loud, especially around Santa Catalina.

What it costs

The figures below come from the long-term rental market. Furnished places for a few weeks cost noticeably more, especially in winter. Add 7 % IGIC to coworking prices.

Room in a shared flat, 1 month

According to idealista, the average was 420 EUR in Q1 2026. That's the long-term market; short stays usually cost more.

Small flat up to 60 m²

According to enalquiler, around 960 EUR a month on average in May 2026 for long-term lets; furnished for 1–2 months is clearly more.

Coliving

Repeople advertises offers from 1,190 EUR for four weeks at its house in Agaete (outside the city); prices for its Las Palmas houses aren't online, so ask directly.

Coworking, 1 month

150–175 EUR plus IGIC at Soppa de Azul, depending on flexible or fixed desk.

Airport bus

Line 60 costs 2.30 EUR to San Telmo and 2.95 EUR to Santa Catalina, according to Aena.

Meeting people

The dedicated nomad infrastructure of earlier years has shrunk; the old Nomads.com meetups, for example, stop in 2023. Today the most reliable ways to meet people are the coworkings themselves, surf lessons on the beach and coliving houses.

White Forest breakfast

Reviews on its website mention a shared breakfast on Thursdays, an easy way to settle in.

Talleres Palermo events

The bar, rooftop and regular events make it a meeting point even if you work elsewhere.

Repeople Coliving

Living in a coliving house gives you community on site.

Discover Gran Canaria with friends

A Meetup group for excursions, hikes and language practice, coordinated via WhatsApp. Its last listed events are a while back, so check activity before joining.

Getting there & paperwork

Direct flights from Germany take around four and a half to five hours. From the airport, Global bus line 60 runs twice an hour to San Telmo and Santa Catalina in about 25 minutes according to Aena, with the last departure around 23:15; after that it's a taxi. EU citizens, including Germans, enter with an ID card or passport and need no visa. If you live in Spain for more than three months, EU citizens must register with the authorities. Official government pages are binding; this is not legal advice. Bring your European Health Insurance Card and check whether you need travel health insurance on top.

The catches

Las Palmas works better for daily life than many island towns, but it has frictions you won't see on any data page.

Parcels and customs

The Canaries are outside the EU VAT area. Many online shops won't deliver, and couriers charge customs handling fees. Bring what you need.

Grey summers in the city

The panza de burro can hang over Las Palmas for weeks in midsummer while the south of the island is sunny.

Tight housing market

A new Canary Islands law on holiday rentals has applied since December 2025. For short lets, look for registered accommodation and a written contract; dodgy listings are common.

Far from everything

Flights take longer than to mainland Spain and quick trips home cost more. On the plus side, the island is one hour behind Central European time, which makes morning calls easier.

Atlantic, not Mediterranean

The water is cooler than many expect, and there are currents outside the reef zone at Las Canteras. Follow the lifeguards' flags.
